Welcoming a newborn changes the rhythm of life almost overnight. The tiny fingers, sleepy expressions, stretches, yawns and the way your baby settles into your arms are details that feel unforgettable in the moment—but they change remarkably quickly.

A newborn photography session gives your family a way to preserve this short chapter beautifully. At Cradle Studio in Lajpat Nagar, New Delhi, we want the experience to feel calm and comfortable for both baby and parents. A little preparation before your session can make the day easier, which is why we have put together this practical newborn photoshoot checklist.

When should you plan a newborn photoshoot?

Many families prefer to photograph their baby during the early newborn stage, when babies are still very sleepy and naturally curl into some of the positions associated with newborn portraits.

However, every baby is different. Rather than worrying about achieving one exact age or pose, speak with the studio about your baby's age, feeding pattern and comfort. The session should always adapt to the baby—not the other way around.

If possible, it is useful to contact your photographer during pregnancy so that a tentative session window can be planned around your expected delivery date.

Feed your baby before the session

A comfortable, well-fed baby will often settle more easily. Try to plan a feed close to the session, but do not worry if your baby needs another feed during photography. Newborn sessions should allow time for feeding, soothing, changing and cuddling.

There is no need to rush. At Cradle Studio, the pauses between photographs are part of working respectfully with a newborn.

Bring extra feeding supplies

If your baby uses expressed milk or formula, bring more than you expect to need. For breastfeeding mothers, plan clothing that makes feeding comfortable during breaks.

A newborn session can take longer than a conventional portrait session because we work around the baby's natural rhythm.

Pack extra nappies and wipes

Bring enough supplies for the full visit, including:

  • Extra nappies
  • Baby wipes
  • Muslin and burp cloths
  • An extra baby outfit
  • Feeding essentials
  • Any comfort item your baby regularly uses

Small accidents during newborn photography are completely normal.

Keep baby's clothing simple before arriving

Complicated outfits can sometimes wake a sleeping baby while changing. If your photographer has planned wraps, fabrics or studio styling, dressing your baby in something simple and easy to remove before arriving can make the transition into the session smoother.

What should parents wear?

Parents do not need elaborate clothing for beautiful newborn photographs. Neutral and softly coordinated colours generally keep attention on the baby and help create portraits that remain timeless.

Consider cream, beige, white, muted brown, soft pastels or other colours that complement your chosen session styling. Rather than making every family member wear exactly the same colour, aim for clothing that feels coordinated.

Avoid large logos and very busy patterns. Most importantly, choose something that still feels like you.

Can siblings and grandparents join?

Absolutely—when included in your chosen session and planned in advance. A newborn photoshoot is not only about photographs of the baby. Images with parents, siblings and grandparents can become some of the family's most meaningful photographs years later.

If an older sibling will be joining, let the studio know beforehand so the session flow can be planned around their age and attention span.

Bring one meaningful personal item

You may want to bring one small sentimental object such as a family heirloom, a special blanket, a handmade toy or something gifted by grandparents. Not every prop needs to appear in the final gallery. Sometimes one meaningful detail is enough to make a portrait uniquely yours.

Do not worry if your baby does not sleep

Parents sometimes arrive concerned because their baby is awake, unsettled or behaving differently from usual. That is completely normal.

Newborn photography should not depend on forcing a baby into a predetermined schedule. Beautiful photographs can include sleepy portraits, awake expressions, tiny details, parent-and-baby moments and natural interactions.

The goal is not perfection. It is to preserve your baby as they are during this extraordinary stage.

Safety should always come before the photograph

When choosing a newborn photographer, ask how the studio approaches newborn comfort and safety. No photograph is worth compromising a baby's wellbeing.

At Cradle Studio, our approach is human-led, with carefully selected AI-assisted tools supporting parts of post-production. Photography decisions, baby handling, posing and final creative judgement remain human-led.

AI-assisted tools may support technical checks, image-selection review, colour consistency and finishing quality control while the intention remains to preserve natural expressions and the individuality of your family.

Give yourself extra travel time

Delhi traffic can be unpredictable, particularly when travelling with a newborn. Cradle Studio is located in Lajpat Nagar IV, New Delhi, so plan enough time for feeding, changing and unexpected delays before leaving home.

You should arrive ready to enjoy the experience rather than feeling rushed.

Your newborn photoshoot checklist

For baby: nappies, wipes, feeding supplies, muslin cloths, an extra outfit and baby's usual comfort items.

For parents: your selected outfits, simple grooming essentials and any accessories agreed with the studio.

For the session: one or two meaningful personal items if you would like them photographed.

And finally—bring patience. Some babies sleep throughout their session. Others need several feeds and cuddles. Both are perfectly normal.

Preserve a chapter that passes quickly

In the early weeks, it can feel as though these tiny details will remain forever. Then suddenly the newborn curl disappears, their expressions change and an entirely new stage begins.

That is why newborn photographs become increasingly valuable with time. They are not simply photographs of how small your baby once was. They preserve something about how becoming a family felt.
